Now looking at the list of features there is nothing I need as a hobbyist and educator on the Pro version that is not on the Platinum version because I don't use special effects.
But even if you do plan to do special effects, then it may still be better to start on Platinum, learn the basics and then upgrade. The Vegas suite are all great pieces of software. The only drawback I can think of, other than that all linear editors take a little while to figure out, is that with each new release of the Sony Software there are often bugs which cause the system to crash in early releases of the software as attested by some of the reviews of Sony Vegas Pro 13 right now.
These bugs are often the fault of external plugins. The only other downside is the support site which can be a bit chilly and possibly Japanese. I had an issue where I had two accounts that were associated on some parts of the sight but not on others. And I wish it or its little brother, would render to flash.

I have a video clip recorded at 30 fps. When I try to make it faster by holding control and dragging left, the end product is very choppy. How can I make it smooth? I have a different tutorial that explains how to speed up or slow down video more accurately. You can only speed up a video clip so far and then it will start to look like it is jumping around. Try using this alternate method. May be great video but the view I see is blurred so I can't really see what menu item you are clicking on.
